Rounders (1998)

211) Rounders (1998)

A young man is a reformed gambler who must return to playing big stakes poker to help a friend pay off loan sharks.

6/10 – A very slick and well acted film, but ultimately falls short of being something compelling. I felt very disconnected from the entire film, no real risk or thrill conveyed in any of the gambling scenes, but it was the performances of Damon and Norton that keep the film alive. There are rumours that they are due to make a sequel, and I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing it. It was a good film and one worth watching, a sequel with Damon and Norton on screen together again would always be worth watching. If it was just little more edgier, a bit deeper and darker then it could have been great. It had every option to explore that side of the ‘underworld’ of gambling, but chose to revert back to the friendly, simple dynamic of the two leads.
