209) The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

8/10 – I was relatively skeptical when I heard they were remaking Sam Raimi’s Spiderman, and as such I had held off from watching it for a couple of years. The second one of these came out and everyone I knew was raving about it, so I decided to watch both back to back.
I don’t see much in this film that wasn’t in the original. It’s graphically better, but on the whole the story-line more or less is the same, only with more seriousness. Andrew Garfield was a nice surprise in this film, he wasn’t better than Tobey Maguire, just different. He showed more of a quirky side but it was still very apparent he was a teenager which meant the film came across less about the hero but more about the man behind the mask. Whereas Maguire seemed far more maturer than his age suggested, and the focus was much more on the Spiderman side of his character. The differences are few and subtle, but it seemed to be a consistent theme throughout the film, nothing that was integral to the story was any better, it was just refreshed and slightly altered.
Whether or not it was necessary to completely reboot the entire franchise after Sam Raimi decided not to make Spider-man 4, I’m unsure. I wouldn’t have missed it if they didn’t make it, and I didn’t hear of many people crying out for another Spiderman or a reboot. But I’m glad they did. It opened it out to another sequel, and unlike other reboots where they are simply having another crack at it because the other one was terrible, this film stretched to be something different and it showed. A little long in the run time, far from amazing, but a good effort and a welcome addition to the superhero film genre.
