Election 2 (2006)

203) Election 2 [aka Triad Election] (2006) “Hak se wui yi wo wai kwai” (Original Title)

As election time nears, current Triad chairman Lok (Yam) faces competition from his godsons. At the same time, Jimmy (Koo) looks to increase his business relations with mainland China.

9/10 – The sequel to the highly rated Election, and it doesn’t disappoint. Playing to it’s strengths again, Johnnie To uses intense realism and unbelievable attention to detail to create another classic of the gangster genre. No over the top violence or insane gun fights, it is dialogue heavy and relies on the viewer investing themselves in the movie. Political undertones set the tone in this film, corruption, greed and jealousy all run rampant and amount to unspeakable acts with little or no remorse for those around them. As usual, visually it’s near perfect and the score does so much to elevate the scenes adding layer upon layer of tension. The acting is exceptional, these two films really are something special.

Highly recommended.
