196) God’s Pocket (2014)
When Mickey’s crazy step-son Leon is killed in a construction ‘accident’, nobody in the working class neighborhood of God’s Pocket is sorry he’s gone. Mickey tries to bury the bad news with the body, but when the boy’s mother demands the truth, Mickey finds himself stuck in a life-and-death struggle between a body he can’t bury, a wife he can’t please and a debt he can’t pay.
5/10 – What a shame that this was one of Philip Seymour Hoffmans last films. A great cast couldn’t save it from being a weird misfire. Caught between being a dark comedy and a violent mob film, it never finds it footing in either. It’s ultimately very watchable, if not a little boring, but how much of that perseverance was due to knowing it was Hoffmans last film is unclear. Not to detract from Hendricks and Jenkins’s unnerving performances in the film, their chemistry was unmatched and was a welcome break from the inconsistent ramblings of the main story-line.
Worth a watch simply because it was his last movie, but not any of their best work by any stretch of the imagination.
