8/10 – I am not familiar with the book, so as with previous reviews I can’t comment on it’s accuracy or how true to the original it remained. However, it was a very intriguing film and one that deserves to be seen. While the performances are all excellent, a real stand out feature of the film were the locations chosen and the way they were presented. The clammy, foreign conditions drove home the panic, the creeping tension and heightened Viggo Mortensen’s actions even more. As far as directorial debuts go, Hossein Amini didn’t go too far wrong. The final act was a bit all over the place, perhaps that was unavoidable if that is what the book dictates, but above all else he created a well polished, classy thriller that was a pleasure to watch from start to finish.
