9/10 – Strange, endearing and simply brilliant. Hard to believe that Quvenzhane Wallis who plays 6 year old Hushpuppy is just that, 6 years old. There is so much screen presence, so much energy, attitude and emotion for such a young actress that it leaves you speechless. Call it a ‘coming of age’ film, a ‘tour de force’, whatever other buzz phrases people use to describe this type of film, but you can’t deny it’s originality and how excellent this debut film is.
