157) Night Catches Us (2010)
In 1976, complex political and emotional forces are set in motion when a young man returns to the race-torn Philadelphia neighborhood where he came of age during the Black Power movement.
7/10 – Not too brash or sensationalised, it comes across as a very serious film about a difficult time in the post-Black Panther era. Strong performances from Kerry Washington and Anthony Mackie carry the film through, alongside an excellent soundtrack by The Roots. Impressive debut by Tanya Hamilton who surprisingly hasn’t done anything since.
