153) Don Jon (2013)
A New Jersey guy dedicated to his family, friends, and church, develops unrealistic expectations from watching porn and works to find happiness and intimacy with his potential true love.
7/10 – An impressive and bold directorial debut from Gordon-Levitt, backed by a great cast (in particular Julianne Moore) who all play off each other brilliantly. Between Johansson, Levitt, Danza and Headly, they each embody their exaggerated satirical characters perfectly, put Moore in as the seemingly normal person and you strike a good if not great balance. But for me the film fell short when it tried to put a heartfelt message in among the shouting, it didn’t fall in line with the tone of the film and although well intended, came across as a predictable cop out. I won’t spoil the ending for obvious reasons, but for me it was a small blip in what was a thoroughly entertaining film.
