146) A Hiacking (2012) “Kapringen” (original title)
The crew of a Danish cargo ship is hijacked by Somali pirates who proceed to engage in escalating negotiations with authorities in Copenhagen.
9/10 – Firstly, subtitle-phobes, don’t be put off by it being in Danish because about 75% of the film is actually in English. Secondly, this is nothing like Captain Phillips. It’s not better or worse, it’s just completely different. This is a meticulous, tense and gripping exercise in suspenseful film-making deeply rooted in realism, not sensationalism. It’s a subdued film, that not only exposes you to the claustrophobic atmosphere of the hostage situation, but also follows the tactful negotiations with the CEO of the shipping company. It’s a drawn out, emotionally draining and bleak thriller.
Highly recommended.
