Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002)

141) Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002)

A recently laid off factory worker kidnaps his former boss’ daughter, hoping to use the ransom money to pay for his sister’s kidney transplant.

8/10 – Difficult to believe that I’ve only just got around to watching the first of the Vengeance trilogy by Chan-wook Park, especially considering how highly I rate Oldboy. Although no link to Oldboy other than the theme itself, at times you do notice certain similarities; the style, the violence, the twists and the turns it takes, the near perfect acting, the concept. So much to like about it, but it does go a bit overboard at times. The gore isn’t the issue, there’s hardly any of it by Korean standards, but it just comes off a little cheap and lacked that subtlety that Oldboy has.
