Short Term 12 (2013)

40) Short Term 12 (2013)

A 20-something supervising staff member of a residential treatment facility navigates the troubled waters of that world alongside her co-worker and longtime boyfriend.

9/10 – Very surprised at how good this film was. I hadn’t even checked the ratings, or really read the description thoroughly, but I watched it on the basis that I thought it would be an ‘easy watch’, as a lot of indie films are these days. The types of ones that grace our screens with a nice Instagram type filter on it, and offer a quirky perspective on love, partying or growing up – not this film.

It was hard hitting, yet heartwarming. There is a reason this film holds a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s almost impossible to fault it. The only grievance I have with the entire film is that it could have been slightly longer, as to avoid the somewhat rushed ending. Otherwise, the character development was like nothing I’d seen before in a film of this type and the acting all round, in particular Brie Larson, was fantastic. Highly recommended.
